Sabanci University is a private research university established in 1994 and located on a large campus in Tuzla, Istanbul, Turkey. The university opened for academic instruction in 1999 and has the highest research income per faculty member among all Turkish universities. Its robotics research is conducted across multiple labs: the Cognitive Robotics Lab (CogRobo), the Human-Machine Interaction (HMI) Laboratory focusing on haptics and physical human-robot interaction, and the Soft Robotics and Control Lab (SRCL) focusing on novel soft robots and actuators.
In 2009, Sabanci developed SURALP, Turkey's first dynamically walking humanoid robot, in collaboration with TUBITAK. The university has three faculties — Engineering and Natural Sciences, Arts and Social Sciences, and Business — plus a School of Languages, and more than 70 student clubs.
