Founded in 2011 by Stratos Arampatzis, Ortelio specializes in cloud robotics, developing applications and platforms that give robots the intelligence needed to take over human tasks across domains including elder care, healthcare, education, manufacturing, and drone operations.

Ortelio's cloud robotics work uses frameworks including OpenCV, Caffe2, and CNTK. The company's cloud platform enables knowledge sharing across robots — objects, faces, sounds, voices, and locations can be shared on demand — enabling cooperative behavior among distributed robot systems.

Key platforms developed by Ortelio include: RAPP, a software platform supporting creation and delivery of robotics applications targeted at people at risk of social exclusion, especially older people; MARIO (Managing Active and Healthy Aging with Use of Caring Service Robots), focused on cognitive assistance for elderly users; RoboBrain, a biologically inspired software architecture for humanoid robots that maps main functions of the human brain, developed in collaboration with Peracton Ltd (Ireland), University of Passau (Germany), and Tropo Inc (USA); and the Noos open cloud robotics control platform, under development since 2014.

Ortelio is a member of euRobotics AISBL. In 2020, Corporate Vision magazine awarded Ortelio the title of Best Cloud Robotics Research Company. Ortelio is recognized as a major European company in cloud robotics by research reports from ResearchandMarkets and The Insight Partners, which cited it among the top ten players in the cognitive assessment market.

Ortelio leads EU-wide research initiatives including work on ubiquitous semantics for open-world robotics, and collaborates with Noosware on a cloud infrastructure platform for dementia prevention.
