Fundación IDONIAL

Fundacion IDONIAL, trading as IDONIAL Centro Tecnologico, is a private non-profit technology centre in Asturias, northern Spain. It was created on 1 January 2019 by merging two established Asturian foundations: ITMA, a materials research centre with roughly 28 years of history, and PRODINTEC, founded in 2004 as a centre for industrial design and advanced production technologies. The merged organisation carries CIF G33914557 and is entered in the Asturian register of foundations as 33/FDC 0088. It employs around 161 people, of whom the centre states 31 per cent hold doctorates, and works from sites in Gijon (headquarters, in the city's science and technology park), Aviles, Llanera and Madrid. Its governing board draws on private companies, regional public administration and university representatives, and it is a member of Fedit, the Spanish federation of technology centres.

IDONIAL organises its work around materials, advanced manufacturing and industrial digitalisation. Its named knowledge areas cover steel and metallic materials, refractories and ceramics, surfaces and coatings, welding and joining, numerical simulation, biofabrication, smart products and active materials, additive manufacturing and digital industry. The robotics-relevant weight sits in the last two, which carry forward the capability base PRODINTEC built before the merger.

Within its digital industry line the centre develops and applies collaborative robotics and human-machine interaction, automated and robot-operated process steps, and 2D and 3D machine vision for quality inspection and for detecting people and objects. Alongside this it builds virtual-reality training simulators and augmented-reality operator assistance, integrates IoT sensing with custom hardware and software for data capture and visualisation, and develops remote control and predictive maintenance systems. A separate digital twin and discrete-event simulation capability is used to verify plant layouts, size resources, balance production lines, analyse logistics strategies and queueing, and apply lean manufacturing analysis before physical changes are made. Important for how this entry should be read: these are contract R&D, engineering and integration services delivered to client companies, not robot products sold by IDONIAL.

On the manufacturing side the centre was, in its PRODINTEC form, one of Spain's more active additive manufacturing research groups in both metal and polymer processes, with work spanning aerospace structures, medical implants and tooling with conformal cooling channels, and it continues to run additive manufacturing as a named area. It also operates nine laboratories and test facilities, including chemical analysis, corrosion, mechanical and electronic design, structural integrity and mechanics, refractory materials, metrology, plastics, a product and process workshop, and a test centre for vertical transport systems.

The centre holds ISO 9001 quality, ISO 56001 R&D and innovation management and ISO/IEC 27001 information security certificates from AENOR, and three ENAC accreditations covering its testing laboratory (60/LE154, to UNE-EN ISO/IEC 17025), its calibration laboratory (86/LC10058, to the same standard, for temperature, humidity, pressure, vacuum, electrical, dimensional, mass, acoustic and ultrasonic measurement) and its inspection activity in metrological control (396/EI693, to UNE-EN ISO/IEC 17020). The accreditations apply across all its work centres.

Sectors served include aerospace and defence, energy, rail, automotive, healthcare and biotechnology, metalworking, capital equipment and general industrial production. For a robotics supply chain IDONIAL is a research and engineering partner rather than a vendor: a European integrator or manufacturer would approach it for contract development, vision and robotics application engineering, simulation studies, materials work or accredited testing and calibration, and would find it through Spanish and EU public research programmes as much as through commercial channels.
